"If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world."
On July 4th, our pastor, Tom Pennington of Countryside Bible Church in Southlake, TX, prayed this much needed prayer for our nation with passion and great conviction. My friend transcribed the prayer so that we could all pray to our Sovereign Lord with united hearts.
"Our Father, on this 4th of July weekend as we celebrate the beginning of our country, we come before you with divided hearts. We come first and foremost expressing to you our deep and genuine gratitude for the legacy and the heritage we enjoy in this land—a land that has known so many believers. Thank you for the freedoms we still have and enjoy. Thank you that we can even gather here today as those who know you and love you to worship you without fear. This is a great treasure and one that many of our brothers and sisters around the world would love to have. We do thank you and praise you for your goodness to us.
Yet, Father, at the same time we see around us the same sinful patterns that the prophets saw. So we confess to you the sins of our nation. We confess the sins of our leaders. Lord, the highest judges of our land have set themselves against you and against your Word. They have rebelled against the dictates of conscience and the clear commands of Scripture. Our president has set a course that is contrary to your clear will, and he does so under the guise of following our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, our legislature cannot function as it was designed because of the lack of peaceable, reasonable men and women who can work together to accomplish what needs to be done. Even in this political season, you have given us the candidates to vote for that we deserve. Truly, we are a nation broken by our sins.
We also confess to you the sins of our people. Our land is filled with the worship of idols and with idolatry. We have become a truly pagan nation. We acknowledge that as a people we do not keep your Name holy. It is constantly sullied and taken in vain, in our entertainment and in the everyday conversation of our people. We refuse to set aside time to worship you. Father, we acknowledge that we continually rebel against the authorities you have placed over us. We are a nation consumed by sexual sin. The blood of innocent people stains the streets of our cities, including the innocent blood of countless unborn children. We confess to you that we are a people given to deception and lies.
We confess these sins freely to you. And all we can do is plead for your compassion. Lord, whatever you choose to do in your justice, as a people we deserve. But we plead for your compassion, your grace, and your mercy. Because that is who you are! Lord, we plead on behalf of your people, because there are many in this land who know and love your Son. And, Father, your gospel has been exported from these shores around the world. So we pray for the sake of the gospel and for the sake of your people that you would withhold what we deserve. Humble our leaders and bring them to genuine repentance and faith in your Son. And may your Spirit bring many to a true knowledge of yourself. Bring us to our knees, and to you. And may the work that you do start with us who follow your Son. We pray in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen."
